Maxine H. introduced Nancy
Hostesses: Thanks to Sura J., Debbie W. and Dawn V. and to Carol M. our Coordinator
Minutes: Minutes of February were distributed by e-mail. The February minutes are approved as distributed
Treasurer’s Report: Alice M. reported our bank balance as $5,491.57.
Sunshine Committee: Nothing to report.
Ways and Means: There was no ways and means for the month of March but we will need to double our efforts for next month. Pam W. wanted to know if a wicker chair would be an acceptable item to sell
Unfinished Business: May Plant Sale – Raffle – Kay P. let everyone know that a gift certificate from Foxglove Nursery, in the amount of $90, has already been donated. Raffle tickets were on sale at this month’s garden meeting. Tickets for the raffle will be sold at the Kingston Open House, April KGC meeting and Ecofest, to name a few. Linda M. urged members to pot any plants before April 1st, this will give the plants time to “settle”. Linda requested that members pot a minimum of 10 plants preferably in one gallon pots. Members were reminded that potting soil and plant pots are available at Linda’s house and we are welcome any time. Pots are also available at the Hansville Transfer Station and Gayle from Foxglove also offered one gallon plant pots. Eleanor D., who has the sign-up sheet for assignments, announced that more volunteers were needed. Carol D. again asked if anyone needs help digging plants and repotting to let her know. Linda announced that she will be unable to come to the plant sale due to a conflict. Ann W. will help set up tables at the community center the night before the sale. When labeling the plants please give as much information as possible, i.e. botanical name as well as the common name, whether the plant needs sun or shade, etc.
Two volunteers are needed to “organize traffic” – steering people to perennials, annuals, etc.
Laurie Y. has colored sticks denoting price as well as blank sticks (for plant information) donated by Sacks. There was a handout with pricing and other relevant information.
Advertising – Carol H., Ann W. and Nancy M. will coordinate.
Aloha Wright – Dawn V. announced that one grant request from the Downtown Kingston Association in the amount of $500 was received and approved.
Kingston Town Meeting – Maxine H., Annika M. and Kay P. will be “manning” the booth.
Job Descriptions – Bobbi W. has not received any new job descriptions in the past month and requested that they be e-mailed to her before April 1st. Bobbi W. let everyone know that these descriptions are available so that you can see what jobs there are and if you would be interested in volunteering. Click here for the Job Descriptions.
Annual Kingston Cleanup Day is set for March 29th. KGC will be cleaning the cemetery (W. Kingston Road to Norman St., turn south/left on Norman, cemetery is on the left just past the entrance to Norman Road) - volunteers are requested to meet at the cemetery at 9:00 a.m. This work is being performed in conjunction with Kingston Revitalization, who will be working downtown. Sharon N. will send e-mail to club members.
April Meeting – Dan Hinckley will be the guest speaker. Since we will have his presentation first and then have our meeting after, there will be set-up. This presentation is open to the public so club members were urged to arrive early to get a seat. Nancy M. will place an article in the Kitsap Herald and the local paper announcing our guest speaker although it is unclear what the subject will be. Bobbi W. checked with Dan to see if he would have any objections to the KGC asking for donations – he had no problems but requested that any money collected should be donated to the Kitsap County Wildlife Rehabilitation Center on Bainbridge Island.
New Business: Mary S. presiding in April.
Blanche Grey – 8 club members met at Ann I’s house for the first meeting. The theme this year is “Garden of the Senses”. Ann gave a brief overview of what the Blanche Grey project is for the benefit of new members. The Wolfle and Gordon Elementary School students are given seed packages before the summer vacation to plant. In September there is a display of plants and ribbons awarded. In the past Burpee has donated seeds but we now have to come up with alternate sources. There was a discussion about KGC buying seed packages that was agreed to by all members. Valley Nursery and Henery’ Hardware have already donated some seeds but we are short about 200 packets. Alice M. informed the club that we have the funds to buy seeds so Madelynne C. took on the task of obtaining these seeds from Henery at their cost price. Annika went on to say that the Blanche Grey project makes us unique and has been going on for 27 years and we need to keep it going. We also need a graphics logo for this year’s theme.
Design of the Day: Carol M. showed rhododendrons and ranunculus in a small basket with shamrock beribboned handle alongside a green Beany Baby, a soft lamb toy sporting a shamrock and an Irish poem.
Show and Tell: Nothing to report.
Door Prizes: Carol M., Annika M., Kay P., Maggie S. (guest), Ann W.
Announcements: Dave of Foxglove Nursery offered KGC members a 20% discount for plants if we were to go one day as a group. Dave said the best time would probably be about mid to late April but to contact either himself or Gayle to set up a date. Foxglove also offered to bulk buy moss and osmocote fertilizer for members if they are interested.
Gordon PTA Fund-an-Item event this year is “Plant a Seed”. This is a fundraiser for the school that includes an annual on-line auction. Annika M. was asked for a quote in the local paper that will be published. E-mail Sharon N. for more information.
General Community Interest: March 27th – There will be a wine tasting and auction at Bainbridge Island Winery.
May 3rd - The Rhododendron Society will have a display of rhododendrons all day.
Next Meeting: April 16, 2008. Dan Hinckley will be our guest speaker.
The meeting adjourned at: 10.26 a.m.
Respectfully submitted, Dawn V., Secretary
