KINGSTON GARDEN CLUB

MEETING MINUTES APRIL 16, 2008

 

Mary S. called our meeting to order at the Redeemer United Methodist Church at 11:05 a.m. 

 Members Present:                     40 members and 19 guests.

Hospitality:                               KGC welcomes new member Sue H. and Karen R.

Guests:  Linda, Sue, Mary, Bob, Diana, Chris, Allison, Dar Lyn and Beatrice from Raven Nursery

 Hostesses:                                Thanks to Nancy M., Kay P. and Sally C. and to Carol M. our Coordinator

 Minutes:                                   Minutes of March were distributed by e-mail.  The March minutes are approved as distributed

 Treasurer’s Report:                   Alice M. reported our bank balance as $4,630.72.

Sunshine Committee:                 A get-well card was sent to Kay P’s husband 

 Ways and Means:                     Pam W. reported a total of $73.91 so far this year 

 Unfinished Business:                  May Plant Sale – Raffle – Volunteers will be selling tickets for the raffle at the Kingston Farmers Market and Ecofest on Saturday April 19th.  Some raffle prizes were displayed at the meeting today.  Beatrice from Raven Nursery was introduced at the meeting – Beatrice has donated plants for the raffle.  Formal Thank You letters will be sent to everyone who donated something for the raffles

Flyers were placed on tables with labeling/pricing information as well as an advertisement to place in the window of member’s cars announcing the plant sale.

 Linda M. also had flyers to be posted in various areas where members live.  When labeling the plants please give as much information as possible, i.e. botanical name as well as the common name, whether the plant needs sun or shade, etc.  Information labels (courtesy of Sacks) and pricing sticks were distributed to members.  Laurie and Linda will be at the Community Center  between 10am-12 noon on Wednesday, April 30th if anyone needs blank labels and pricing sticks.  The plant sale sign-up sheet was sent around.

Carol M., Carol D., Jan S. and Madelynne C. signed-up to bring in goodies for the volunteers on May 3rd

Noel L. will e-mail members with a potting date for members who need to repot last minute plants at Linda M’s house

Aloha Wright – Nancy M. formally thanked the Kingston Garden Club for the $500 check awarded to the Downtown Kingston Association.  This money will be used for the beautification of the planting strips on West Kingston Road – (Savage Plants gave Rubis ground cover to the DKA at their cost).  Volunteers will be needed to help plant after our plant sale – more information will be given either at the next club meeting or through e-mails  

April Meeting – Dan Hinckley gave an excellent slide-show on plant marriages, punctuation, accentuation and exclamation.  We collected approximately $150 in donations which Dan has requested be donated to the Kitsap County Wildlife Rehabilitation Center on Bainbridge Island.

Blanche GreyTheme is “Garden of the Senses”. 

A poster has been put together featuring the logo by Liz.  Dates for the show are: 

Gordon Elementary – September 11th and Wolfle – September 18th.   

Madelynne C. had taken on the task of obtaining seed packets.  Henery Hardware donated 100 seed packets and sold another 100 to the KGC at their (Henerys) cost.

 New Business:  Job Fair – Members will be asked to volunteer for one of the many jobs available in the garden club

June 18th Meeting Member Garden Tours – Need two volunteers to show their gardens for the June garden club “Program”.  Michael B. volunteered his garden on Lady Bug Road.  An Indianola non-member has also volunteered her garden.  We will have social time and the business meeting first followed by garden owner’s brief talk on their respective garden

New Idea for our club – Noel L. suggested featuring members gardens for "Open Gardens" throughout the year when they are at their best.

 Design of the Day:                    Madelynn C. brought in pink magnolia flowers and curly twig branches in a shallow dish

                                                Carol M. brought in a bouquet of red tulips and yellow daffodils

 Show and Tell:                          Elaine J. brought in a very pretty yellow camellia “Jury’s Yellow” and also reddish Fritallaria “Henflower” – which is a bulb plant

 Door Prizes:                             Robin C., Wendy T., Karen R., Pam W. and Madelynn C.

 Announcements:                       In the March monthly meeting, Dave of Foxglove Nursery offered KGC members a 20% discount for plants if we were to pick a day and go as a group.  May 6th, 7th or 8th at 10:00 a.m. have been chosen as the best dates, so Bobbi W. will check with Dave to find out if one of these dates will be acceptable.  An e-mail will be sent to members with the date.  Members were asked for a show of hands to see if there was any interest in a “bulk buy” of osmocote. 

Kingston Hanging Basket Watering Schedule – Volunteers are needed to help with the watering.  Contact Karen R.

Nominating Committee – Nancy M, Pam W. and Mary S. volunteered to be a part of this committee

Cemetery Clean-Up – Sharon N. thanked the members who volunteered to clean-up the cemetery.  There will be an article in the Community News.  Pictures are on the Kingston Garden Club website.  There was some discussion about cleaning the cemetery more often.  This item will be discussed further at a later date

 General Community Interest:     April 26th – Book sale at the Community Center

May 3rd – Fuchsia plant sale in the Cat Barn at the Fairgrounds between 9.00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

May 3rd – The Rhododendron Society will have a display of rhododendrons all day

May 10th – Redeemer United Methodist Church is having a Spring Tea and Fashion Show at 2:00 p.m. for $10

Kitsap Humane Society has 9 horses that need new homes – if you know anyone that help!

 Next Meeting:                           May 21, 2008.  Eric Hunter with the Kitsap Rose Society will discuss mid season pruning, fertilization, black spot and powdery mildew
