Anne Fisher, Savage Plants

Kingston Garden Club Minutes for January 19th, 2011

Welcome:  President Liz called the meeting to order at 9:30 am.  She thanked the following people for their help with the meeting:  hospitality included Earleen H and MaryAnn E.  Hostesses were Eleanor D, Sue C, Linda J, Cindy E, and Carol M.

Pledge of Allegiance was said.

Program:  Catherine introduced the program "Plant Design"  presented by Anne Fisher from Savage Plants and Landscape.  She is an assistant to Jim Savage.  In 2005, Ann received her ATA degree in landscape design from Edmonds Community College.  She enjoys the challenge of each landscape project and helping people enhance the quality of their lives by enjoying their gardens.  She provided the members with two handouts: "Anne's Dwarf Conifer Picks for Easy Care, Year-round Interest" and Design Tips for problem areas in the garden.

Guests:  Noel L. introduced Shawn R, a neighbor of Ann I.  She loves sewing and knitting.  Carol M. brought her friend, James A.  He is a member of Redeemer United Methodist Church.

Approval of minutes:  No minutes to approve because of the December Christmas Party last month.

Treasurer's report:  No report as Ann I was out of town.

Committee reports:
     - Sunshine: Elaine was absent.  Liz reported that Kay P's sister has passed away.  Also Trudy V's son died.  Noel L.
read a letter from Linda M.  She is adapting to living in the Wenatchee, WA area; is recovering well from knee replacement
surgery; and has signed up to take a master gardener's class in Chelan.  She thanked everyone for their kind wishes and notes.
     - Christmas Party recap: no report as Nancy was absent.  Liz thanked Nancy for organizing the party and suggested we all check
out the U-Tube video on the party.  She said that the Garden Club donated $500 each to Share Net and the Kingston Food Bank.
     - Programs: Catherine reported that February's program speaker is Pam Sinclair from Valley Nursery.  Her topic is winter plants.
     - Quilts: Noel L. showed us the completed quilt for the raffle and said to buy raffle tickets.
     - Plant Sale: Karen A. said that there will be a planting party on March 7th at 10:00 at Sue's house.  She referred us to page 13 in
our garden book which has the potting party dates and teams listed.

Announcements: Liz mentioned that the church was having a speaker after the meeting.  He is Richard LeMieux, author of "Breakfast at Sally's".   She said our business meeting would have to be over by 11:25 am so that clean-up would be done in time for the church speaker.

Liz also reported that Kingston Farm and Coop is bringing in organic garden club mix in 1.5 cubic foot bags that they will sell.

Kay P. said that Village Green has the pad poured for the bench which was given by the Garden Club and anticipates the bench to be in place very soon.  Thank you Garden Club for the Village Green enhancement.  A meeting with KRL was held concerning what may occur now that the Library levy did not pass.  The outlook for money from the county, state, and federal  government for construction funds continues to be bleak.

New Business:  no report

Show and Tell: no report   Maxine H. said that forsythia, flowering quince, and magnolia are good to force flowers in the house.

The meeting was adjourned at 11:25 am.

Respectfully submitted.

The Kingston Farm & Garden Co-op is ordering a pallet of Intrepid Coco-Coir Premium Potting Soil (www.coco-coir.com) and we're taking orders.  This soil is light and fluffy, great for lots of potting applications, and is WSDA certified organic.  It comes in 1.25 cu. ft. bags (approx. 30 lbs/bag).  This is a product which Sacks Feed used to always carry and we have had several  co-op members asking for it.  Prices are as follows:

Co-op Members -  $7.50/bag (tax included)     Non-Members - $9.50/bag (tax included)

The soil producer does not have regular delivery dates during the winter but they said they could definitely get it to us sometime in mid to late February so we have it for starting seedlings.  Once we get a delivery date we will set pick-up dates in downtown Kingston - likely on a Thursday evening and a Saturday.  We hope that you will be able to make it to one of the two pick-up times but if you've ordered soil and truly can't make it, we'll find a way to get it to you.

To place an order please send an e-mail to growkingston@centurytel.net, call 360-981-6594 and leave a message, or fill out the attached order form and mail it by January 30th to the address on the form.  Payment due at time of pick-up - cash or check only please.  (Click here for form.)  Note: If you have a reseller permit on file with us you receive the pre-tax prices of $6.91 (member) and $8.75 (non-member)

Coco-Coir Ingredients: Coco-Coir (coconut shell fibers), aged conifer epidermis, ash, bone meal, blood meal, compost, feather meal, fish meal, kelp meal, lime, dolomite, olivine, and many strains of beneficial soil organisms
